Arctic Alaska, Canada and Southern Utah Backpacking Trips

We believe North America's most valuable resource is its spectacular and untamed wild lands. Parks, refuges, and forests hold in trust some of the most complete ecosystems left on the planet. In magnificent settings, wildlife still roams free in natural habitats. In Alaska's Brooks Range and Canada's High Arctic, glacial valleys and rugged peaks, gently rolling tundra, lichen-covered hills and meandering rivers create an intricate collage amid endless days under the midnight sun. The cry of a loon across a still lake, the sight of a wolf loping across the tundra -- this is wilderness at its finest.

We cannot fully experience wilderness when we're in a hurry. Afoot, we have a chance to slow down. In the solitude of wild country, and in the company of a small group, we find nourishment and wonder in our wanderings over glacier, mountain and tundra.

We traverse remote river valleys, climb rugged terrain in the shadow of jagged glaciated peaks, explore remnant glaciers, foothills and largely unexplored terrain, following in the footsteps of caribou, bear and wolf, experiencing the explosion of life that is summer in the north. Exact destination and itineraries vary throughout the season. Opportunities for solitude and personal discovery are great. Combine a backpack trip with a river trip and experience true immersion in wild country. Our backpacking trips are recommended for experienced backpackers only. There are no trails, save those of wildlife, and the terrain varies from soggy to dry tundra, and rocky streambeds and scree slopes to golf course-quality flat river terraces.

Treks through British Columbia's Coast Mountains take us through ancient forests to granite-rimmed high alpine tarns. Our backpacking expeditions range from Vancouver Island's West Coast, to Umnak Island in Alaska's Aleutian Islands, and the Brooks Range in the Far North, including the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and Gates of the Arctic National Park. We also travel to the Canadian High Arctic to Bylot and Baffin Island.

Spring and Fall may find us in the spectacular slickrock country of Southern Utah.

The strengthening after-effects of that wonderful and challenging trek have haunted and influenced my entire summer. I treasure the experience and memories.

I just want to say it was an awesome trip. The pace was exactly what I was looking for; the days we spent back in Arrigetch were really cool. Thanks for the great time and organization that went into getting this trip off the ground.

"I'm reminded again of those glorious day-nights of solitude and gentle light, hundreds of acres of wildflowers, the constant presence of muskox, the gift of a hot drink by a slow river...."
