East of Denali National Park, and north of the Chugach Mountains lies a little-known region of superlative scenery, exceptional opportunities for solitude, and wildlife observation, and great hiking--the Talkeetna Mountains. Inaccessible by road, the mountain fortress supports populations of Dall sheep, caribou, grizzly bears, moose, wolves and other smaller wildlife. Glaciated peaks rise to 8,000 feet and a multitude of creeks and streams pour out of the mountains to become some of Alaska's finest fishing rivers.
We fly into a series of alpine lakes nestled in the mountains. The area offers great alpine (treeless) hiking, as well as opportunities to climb up rocky ridges for absolutely breathtaking views of Denali, North America's highest peak at 20,320 feet, and the Alaska Range.
